Denis Shapovalov has certainly been turning heads lately during this year’s edition of the Rogers Cup With a shocking defeat over Nadal. He was accepted as a wildcard into the tournament, but the tennis world didn’t think much of it, he was just another normal wildcard accepted into the tournament because he’s from the same country. All that changed after a triumph over Del Potro in the round of 32. It was a nice surprise for all Canadians watching for home or from the stands. The real shock came after he battled it out with Nadal in three sets and won 3-6,6-4,7-6(4) in two hours and forty five minute’s time. His next challenge is Zverev, will he beat him in the youngest Masters 1000 semifinal ever?
Shapovalov has achieved lots in Junior tennis, he has a junior Wimbledon singles title and a US Open trophy in doubles in his trophy cabinet. He also has achieved second place in Wimbledon during his doubles campaign as a junior. Denis has defeated 2016’s junior world champions Miomir Kecmanovic in the final of a F12 event. He has also beaten fellow Canadian Polansky in the finals of an ATP Challenger event. The Next gen star doesn’t have to much of a clean record when it comes to Davis Cup. Recently, he hit an umpire with a ball resulting in Great Britain getting defaulted against Britain. His Davis Cup win/loss record is 1-2 which means a 33% win percentage in the competition.
Denis clearly has grand Slams in store in the future for him. He has started the journey towards his first with his first career in over a top 10 in tennis’s second strongest tournament in existence. His next obstacle in Montreal is Alexander Zverev, will he be able to defeat him in the semis?
